Sourdough Chronicles: Never ending saga

After Day 5 the starter should have tripled in volume. It didn’t. It didn’t even double. Since Day 5 I have tried many different techniques: bottled water, 1/2 organic rye and 1/2 white flour, a different unbleached white flour, whole wheat flour, sugar, adding commercial yeast, feeding it every 12 hours instead of 24 hours. All of these results did not get my starter to do it’s thing. I should have given up a long time ago (I’ve stopped counting the days, but I’m sure it’s been a month by now). I still want sourdough though! But where to get it in Toronto?

  1. Oh no! Reminds me of my own disaster with trying a sourdough starter, years ago. The only warm spot in the entire house was downstairs in the furnace closet – apparently *too* warm, because the thing dried out by the next day and never did anything! :) Hopefully you’ll have some luck finding bread locally.
